(MITCHELL) - Visitors to Spring Mill State Park on July 19 can enjoy space-related activities and games as the park celebrates Mitchell native Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, America’s second man in space.
Grissom Day activities include crafts, water bottle rockets, space food tasting, evening stargazing and more. The event commemorates the launch of Liberty Bell 7, on July 21, 1961, when Grissom became the second American to go to space.
At 2 p.m., guest speaker Steve Grissom, Gus Grissom's second cousin, will speak in the Grissom Memorial Auditorium about manned space flight and Gus Grissom's role in the space program.
Hoosier Hills Ham Club, an amateur radio club in Lawrence County, will explain the importance of ham operators in emergencies and teach visitors how to spell their names in Morse code.
Also, local astronomy group the StoneBelt Stargazers will bring their telescopes and expertise for an evening "star party" at the pool parking lot at 9:30 p.m. Visitors can arrive early and make a star craft with the naturalist.
Park admission is $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle. Annual Entrance Passes are also available.
Spring Mill State Park (stateparks.IN.gov/2968.htm) is at 3333 State Road 60 East, Mitchell, 47446.
