(JASONVILLE) - Jasonville business owner Mike Cox was surprised at Monday night’s Jasonville City Council meeting when he was announced as the winner of the 2014 Ed Sheppard Award.
The award is handed out in honor of Ed Sheppard, a bank cashier when Jasonville suffered a great fire in 1914 -- a fire that almost completely destroyed the community's business district. At a time when most residents were stunned by the trauma, Sheppard grabbed a shovel and started cleaning debris. As a result of his actions, other residents followed, and Jasonville recovered from the catastrophic event.
Each year, the award is presented for demonstrating love for Jasonville through a positive attitude, community dedication, and optimism regarding the future of the city.
Cox, a native of Hudsonville, Ill., came to Jasonville nearly 34 years ago to work at McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home. In 2009, he opened his own facility, Cox Funeral Home at 218 South Meridian Street in Jasonville.
Cox was nominated by two residents and Jasonville Police Chief Jim Gadberry for Cox's dedication to bring a locally owned and operated funeral home back to the community.
