(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after he allegedly struck a 1-year-old girl in the face Monday during a domestic fight.
Bedford Police were alerted by the emergency staff at IU Health Hospital at 3:37 p.m. that they were treating the toddler in the emergency room for an injury to the right side of her face and her eye.
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says officers spoke to the toddler's mother who claims she and 34-year-old Jason Magnus were in a domestic dispute when Magnus became agitated and struck the child on accident.
"The mother claims it was an accident and that at other times Mr. Magnus has become upset and would strike the wall," Parsley says. "But this time he hit the child. The mother refused to sign a battery affidavit against Mr. Magnus. But in this case it doesn't matter. A child was injured and Mr. Magnus was taken to jail."
After leaving the hospital officers went to an apartment on Ted Jones Drive and arrested Magnus on a charge of battery on a child under the age of 14.
Magnus allegedly told police that he didn't hit the child but the child had fallen and was injured.
The Department of Child Services was also contacted and are investigating the incident.
