(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell 500 Hillbilly Race that was scheduled for Saturday and then called off because of storms will not be rescheduled.
Organizers were not happy they had to cancel the race, but did so because of safety reasons.
"We know it is heartbreaking for all racers, spectators and volunteers," they posted on their Facebook page. "Unfortunately we had to make this decision based on safety. With the severe storms that we had Saturday morning, it was inevitable that we had to cancel this event."
Organizers considered just delaying the race.
"We could not race later in the day because the whole area was extremely wet with pooling water," they posted. " We did not want a driver to wreck because of a wet track or pooling water."
Another problem was the use of electrical equipment and appliances at the race site.
"One of our volunteers received an electrical shock, this made our final decision," they posted. "Although, we truly regret having to make this call, we felt it was necessary."
The race will not be rescheduled because of insurance reasons.
"Considering the insurance that we had to purchase was for one-time only, we cannot reschedule," they posted.
