Mitchell To Do Downtown Revitalization, Enhance Gateway To City

(MITCHELL) - The City of Mitchell plans to revitalize the downtown, redevelop the Opera House and enhance the gateways to the city as part of their Comprehensive Plan.

The plan must be turned into the state by December 15.

City officials hired Bernardin, Lochmueller & Associates of Evansville, to develop the plan. The group then sought feedback from community members, business owners, community professionals and city officials.

The Times-Mail reports that the firm presented the plan to the community on October 21 and the city council approved the plan November 3. But the plan is not complete and the firm is still receiving feedback from the community.

These are some of the suggestions included in the plan:

The city takes a proactive approach to recruiting restaurant business to the downtown area by offering attractive financing and legal assistance.
Upgrade the downtown park but trimming trees and give the historic walking tours more publicity.
Move the farmers' market to a more visible location.
Create a downtown business association.
Save the current police station building.
Enhanced gateway entrances on the highway coming into Mitchell.
Updated the city's zoning ordinance.
Redevelopment of the city-owned Opera House.
Develop a walking and or biking trail that would lead to Spring Mill State Park.
