(LYONS) - Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce says a pipe bomb was discovered Monday morning south of Lyons.
Greene County Sheriff's deputies and other personnel responded to County Road 300 South, between County Road 500 West and County Road 600 West near Lyons Raceway Park, just before 11:30 a.m. after a motorist discovered a suspicious object at the side of the road and called police.
The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit from Crane was also dispatched to the scene.
"The Ordinance Disposal Unit from Crane came on site and deployed two robots and were able to make the device safe," Chief Deputy Major Mike Hasler says. "It appears that there had been an attempt to detonate it, but it failed. Not knowing the contents, the bomb disposal unit was able to destroy it and open it up so we could render it safe."
Hasler say the evidence authorities recovered will be sent to the FBI laboratory.
The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information or who may have seen anything is urged to call the Greene County Sheriff's Department at (812) 384-4411.
Bob Hacker, Superintendent of the White River Valley School Corporation, assured the public that the incident would not interrupt the bus route for students returning home from school that afternoon and buses were rerouted to avoid the area.
