(VALLONIA) - Joe Jackson Hotel in Vallonia is celebrating its 100 anniversary September 13.
The hotel, constructed in 1914, belongs to the Fort Vallonia Days Association and is being restored. It is listed on both national and state registers of historic places. Joe Jackson was a businessman from Washington County who financed construction of the hotel at the request of local businessmen. It opened for business on Sept. 1, 1914. The hotel closed in 1954, but the building continued to be used. It has housed a restaurant, pool hall and barbershop and was used as apartments.
Once renovation is complete, the building will be used for community meetings, social gatherings and there are plans for a town museum.
There will be free watermelon and birthday cake. Fish sandwiches, hot dogs, and other goodies will be for sale.
The celebration is planned for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the pavilion in Vallonia. Those attending should bring law chairs and are encouraged to dress in period clothing.
A special postmark commemorating the birthday will be available at the Vallonia post office.
Music will provided by David and Monica Doty, the Kyper Creek Band, Bluegrass Gospel Alliance and Two Generations.
