(VELPEN) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a motorcycle accident with injuries that occurred around 8 p.m, Tuesday on Ind.257 in Velpen.
According to a police report, 27year-old Robert N. Williams, from Milltown in Crawford County, was test driving a motorcycle, a type commonly called a "crotch rocket", following some maintenance to the vehicle he had attempted.
According to Williams, the throttle stuck at a high rate of speed as he approached a railroad track crossing. As the vehicle crossed the tracks, Williams lost control of the motorcycle, ran through a roadway ditch, and struck a bob wire fence causing severe neck injuries.
Nearby witnesses called 911. The call came in to Pike County Dispatch at 8:14 p.m.
After assisting Williams with his injuries, the witnesses then drove Williams approximately 8 miles west on State Road 64 to Arthur Junction and a waiting ambulance.
Williams was then airlifted by AirEvac to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where he remains in the critical care unit.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Williams was wearing a helmet. The accident is still under investigation.
