(BEDFORD) - Thanks to a $500 grant awarded by Lawrence County Community Foundation, 100 oral health kits will be distributed to cancer patients by Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services.
"These kits will be handed out at local treatment facilities," says Brenda Mckain, secretary of the all volunteer group.
LCCPS assists patients who reside in the county and who are under-insured or who lack insurance. She adds that all the funds raised by group remain in the county.
Mckain hopes that the kits and information provided will stress the importance of the patients increase or sustained oral health.
"While battling cancer," adds Mckain, "oral health is put on the back burner while the patient is facing other obstacles."
An unhealthy mouth can interfere with treatment and sometimes cause adverse effects from treatment, notes Mckain. A third of all cancer patients develop complications from their treatments that affect the mouth and gums.
