Rep. Todd Young Announces 2014 9th District Congressional Veterans Commendation Winners

Last updated on Tuesday, September 9, 2014

(UNDATED) - Rep. Todd Young on Friday announced that Sergeant (Ret.) Michael O’Hara from Brown County, Colonel (Ret.) Shirly M. Ohta from Floyd County, and Staff Sergeant (Ret.) Merrill E. St. John from Orange County were the winners of the 2014 Congressional Veterans Commendation for the 9th District of Indiana.

O'Hara and St. John were presented their awards at town hall meetings in recent weeks, and Ohta will receive hers at an event in October.

"Our part of the country is one of the most patriotic places in the United States, and we have a large number of veterans living here as a result," said Young. "I think it's important to recognize the contributions of those people who continue to serve their community, state, and country even after they leave the military, and hope it inspires future generations to the same sort of public service."

The Congressional Veteran Commendation for the 9th District of Indiana is a nominations-based program designed to publicly recognize the wartime sacrifices and peacetime community involvement of veterans.

To be eligible, veterans must currently reside in the 9th Congressional District.  Nominees must have served as active duty military personnel or been reservists called to active duty and must be retired or honorably discharged from a branch of the United States Armed Forces.

Winners are selected by a review board comprised of local veterans.  For 2014, the review board members were Margaret Bachtold from Bloomington, the Indiana University Military and Veterans Service Coordinator; Jim Pattison from Sellersburg, the American Legion Post 204 Commander; Charles Russell from Greenwood, the Johnson County Veterans Services Officer; and Smitty Moyers from New Albany, a local business owner and Marine.
