(BEDFORD) - City officials closed 13th and J Streets and 14th and I Streets after the west wall of the former Armstrong Furniture building at 1229 I Street collapsed.
According to Bedford Building and Fire Inspector Mel Rile, police received a call sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight reporting the building was collapsing.
"The building owned by Dan Dougherty, was scheduled to be demolished," Rile adds. "He was just waiting for lead paint and asbestos results and demolition would begin. We are not sure if the rain contributed to the wall falling or just what happened."
The building had not been occupied since the early 1980s.
"Armstrong's was the last business in the building," Rile added. "It was then used for storage and then basically empty after that."
Flynn & Sons Excavating & Paving, Inc is on scene taking the remaining portion of the building down.
"As soon as they have that done the streets will be reopened," Rile added.
