(BRYANTSVILLE) - The Lawrence County Animal Control Officer had to put down a dog Tuesday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Sam Craig, the officer responded to Grandma Brown Road at 1 p.m. after several complaints of a German Shepherd/Doberman mix in the roadway causing a traffic hazard.
"Motorists were concerned someone was going to hit the dog or the dog was going to cause an accident," Craig says.
When the officer arrived, the dog approached the officer and then became aggressive.
"He was putting on his gloves and was standing there letting the dog sniff him, when the dog lunged and bit one of his gloves," Craig says. "The dog continued to be aggressive, lunging and growling at the officer and attempting to bite him."
Craig says the officer had no choice but to put the dog down.
"The owner was contacted and advised on what happened," Craig says.
Craig says he can't remember the last time an officer had to shoot an aggressive dog.
"We have had more than 900 animal control calls this year and this is the first one where an animal had to be put down," Craig says. "This is not something we want to see happen and is only done as a last resort. It's sad, but it became a safety issue."
