(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Public Library has made several recent changes in an effort to better serve customers.
The lower-level computer lab, for ages 18 and older, now has two small tables with chairs while still offering six computers. Two express computers, to be used for only 10 minutes or less, are on the counter and require no check-in.
Wall decorations and plants provide a café-like ambiance in the computer lab area, and customers are welcome to bring covered drinks to the area. No drinks are allowed upstairs.
Changes to the children and teen services floor include new furniture, murals, rearranged shelving that provides a wide and open play area for the younger children, comfortable seating for adult caregivers and a defined area for teens.
Fun paper crafts and activities are always provided for children, and now interactive science projects show children how amazing and fun science can be. These materials and demonstrations change periodically.
The teen space encourages reading, interaction and use of technology. Popular new materials are being added to the collection that invite teens to explore the mix of art and literature. Now iPads are available for teens to use while in the library.
The changes are designed to help to build an environment for reading and learning for customers of all ages.
The library welcomes ideas for new programming and encourages input from the community.
October programs
October's schedule offers programs for all ages.
The Our Heroes' Tree, in its seventh year at the library, is a national program honoring the United States military. A tree with ornaments bearing the names of past and present American military personnel stands through Veteran's Day on the library's main floor. Library customers can inscribe their heroes' names on simple ornament templates and place the ornaments on the tree. Ornaments from past years are welcome.
Children's programs include Build a Bot, which allows children ages 8 and older to build vibrating robots that really move at 3 p.m. Oct. 21. Then Skulls and Teeth for ages 10 and older provides animal bones for examination at 3 p.m. Oct. 23.
Teens have an after library hours lock-down on Oct. 17 from 5-8 p.m. A team from Professional Paranormal Investigations will lead teens in a search for paranormal activity in the library. Free pizza and fun are included. Registration is required.
Adults and teens are invited to Writer's Meet-up on Oct. 16 at 5:15 p.m. This gathering, an opportunity for writers to meet each other, will discuss how to participate in and register for National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo, in November. Future meets and write-ins will be scheduled. Inklings Bookstore, 1020 16th St., partners with the library for NaNoWriMo events.
Professional Paranormal Investigations, a group from Decatur County, presents Exploring the Unknown on Oct. 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the adult services reading room. The presenters will explore new discoveries and share stories of their investigations followed by an open forum for attendees to tell their stories.
Book Character Day, Oct. 31, is a fun day to visit the library and see librarians dressed as book characters.
October crafts
Spider crafts abound through Monday. Then bat crafts take over on Tuesday.
