(BIRDSEYE) - A Birdseye man was arrested after a woman was found severely injured in the middle of County Road 1175E southeast of Birdseye early Friday morning.
According to Dubois County police, 22-year-old Jeylyn Staggs of Birdseye had jumped from a 1999 Jeep Cherokee allegedly driven by 22-year-old Tyler O'Keefe of Birdseye.
Police found the Jeep parked nearby, but O'Keefe had fled the scene.
Officers located O'Keefe a short time later in his garage on West Second Street.
O'Keefe was arrested, but refused to submit to an alcohol or drug test. Officers secured a search warrant for a blood draw, which showed O'keefe had marijuana, meth and opiates in his system.
Staggs was transported to Memorial Hospital and transferred to St. Mary's Medical Center for an injury to her head. She was listed in a critical condition.
O'Keefe was jailed on charges of operating while intoxicated, Class A misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony.
The Dubois County Sheriff Department was assisted by Birdseye First Responders and Memorial Emergency Medical Services.
