(BEDFORD) - September was National Childhood Cancer Month and BNL students raised money for cancer research.
BNL Starstrong teamed with Bedford Middle School students to raise more than $1,123 for pediatric cancer research.
This amount will be matched by the OXO baking company resulting in a donation of over $2,246 for pediatric cancer research.
Pediatric cancer continues to be the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 19. In 2014 almost 16,000 children were diagnosed with cancer.
BNL Starstrong held a raffle at BNL sporting events for various gift baskets containing gift cards and other items donated from local restaurants and businesses to raise the funds.
The BNL volleyball team and Limestone Capital Volleyball Club made a generous donation to the cause during a September match.
In support of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the girls also sported yellow ribbons during the match.
Arlene Brim of BMS again spearheaded their second "Jar Wars" competition. Students in grades 6-8 competed against each other to see who could bring in the most change. Current seventh-graders were the defending Jar Wars champions and repeated their win this year.
BNL Starstrong would like to thank BMS students, Arlene Brim, Scott Saunders, area businesses and everyone that contributed to this great cause.
