(BEDFORD) - 69-year-old Charlotte Gerkin of Mitchell is raising funds for Bertha’s Mission by riding her recumbent bicycle from Mitchell to Orleans and back and then from Mitchell to Bedford and back on Wednesday.
The goal is to raise $1,000 for the 100 mile Gerkin's travels.
Motorist who see Gerkin on her trek are asked to say a prayer, honk and give her a wave.
Those wanting to sponsor Gerkin and help raise funds for Bertha's Mission can contact the mission to make a donation.
During her trek Gerkin will be wearing a t-shirt with "Ride for a Cause, Food For the Soul" on it.
Gerkin who is a volunteer at the mission is wanting to bring awareness to the need for volunteers and donations.
Bertha's Mission, located at the corner of Fifth and J streets at the former Chuck's Soul Food, serves meals Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Bedford and Mondays and Fridays in Mitchell at the First Church of God.
They are open from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. till 6:30 p.m. at each location.
The mission serves up to 80 people on any given day.
Donations of meats, canned goods, lemonade, tea and coffee, disposable dinnerware, like plastic silverware, dinner plates, coffee and beverage cups, napkins and cleaning supplies are also needed.
Monetary donations are also accepted for other needed items and to utility bills.
