(BLOOMFIELD) - Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for young Hoosiers between the ages of 15 and 24.
Indiana has the nation's highest rate of students who have contemplated suicide, as well as the country's second highest rate of high school students who have attempted suicide according to the Indiana Youth Institute's (IYI) 2014 Issue Brief Youth Suicide in Indiana.
In an effort to help youth workers address mental health issues among the children they serve, IYI is hosting a forum that will explore how to better connect with children in crisis and get them care they need.
The forum will feature Janie Chappell, manager of Community Services at Deaconess Cross Pointe. Chappell will discuss the signs, symptoms and demographic of youth who may be feeling suicidal. Participants will learn to identify someone who may feel suicidal, find out what questions to ask and how to intervene, if necessary. Attendees will also learn how to access treatment, including understanding of the funding sources for treatment. The Question, Persuade, Refer will be used as a guide.
The forum will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 24, at Casa Sevilla Mexican Restaurant, 635 S. U.S. 231, Bloomfield, 47424.
As part of IYI's Youth Worker Cafe program, the forum is free and lunch will be served, but reservations are required by noon on Oct. 23.RSVP at www.iyi.org/YWC or by contacting IYI Statewide Outreach Manager Debbie Jones via phone at (800) 343-7060 or via email atdjones@iyi.org.
Youth Worker Cafes are designed to bring together local youth workers to build relationships and inspire collaborations that will benefit children. This Youth Worker Café is made possible by the collaborative efforts of Greene Education Services and IYI.
