(BEDFORD) - Parents of Bedford North Lawrence school students would like to see longer summer vacations and are willing to give away fall break to get that.
NLS Superintendent Gary Conner is working on the proposed 2014-15 school calendar.
The Times-Mail reports that many school systems are opting for a "balanced calendar," which provides for regular breaks spread throughout the school year, but a shorter summer vacation. Officials say a "balanced calendar" helps students retain information and teachers do not have to spend much time reviewing previous lessons.
But NLCS parents say summers are packed with church and sports camps, family vacations, summer jobs and other activities and students need a longer summer vacation.
Parents are also objecting to the long Thanksgiving holiday. Students have off Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and many parents work on Wednesday and are left attempting to find daycare for that day.
Another issue discussed was to cut snow days during the second semester and making up any missed days at the end of the school year.
Parents are welcome to contact school board members with their opinions on the calendar before it is approved.
