(JASPER) - An 18-year-old died in a single-vehicle accident reported Sunday evening near Jasper.
According to a Dubois County Sheriff's Department report, deputies were called to the crash scene at 6 p.m. in the 3400 block of County Road 125 East, northeast of Jasper.
The driver of a 2003 Dodge Neon had ran off of County Road 125 East and struck a utility pole. The pole was snapped and laying on the ground. The Dodge was on its driver's side against the pole and an electric wire was exposed and other lines were down and across the vehicle.
Dubois Rural Electric employees were called to ensure the downed lines were not a threat to emergency personnel who needed to access the vehicle.
After the lines were declared safe, the front seat passenger was extricated and transported to Memorial Hospital and then transferred to St. Mary's Medical Center where the driver died from injuries suffered in the accident.
A passenger was also injured.
A witness to the accident told police, a third occupant of the vehicle fled the scene into a nearby bean field towards a treeline.
Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the third person.
Authorities are asking that if anyone has knowledge of this person's identity to contact the sheriff's department at 812-482-3255.
According to police the vehicle was traveling south on County Road 125 East approaching County Road 300 North when it went off the west side of the road into a grassy field. The car struck some landscaping stonework and then hit the utility pole.
Police say speed and road conditions due to the weather are considered to have played a factor in the accident.
Officers located drug paraphernalia in the vehicle
The accident is under investigation and the Dubois County Coroner's office did do toxicology testing and those reports are pending.
The names of the individuals involved and deceased have been withheld pending notification of the family members.
Assisting at the scene were Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Dubois Volunteer Fire Department first responders, Indiana State Police, Dubois REC and a Uebelhor and Sons wrecker.
