(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Half Marathon will be back on October 10, 2015 and organizers are hoping to attract more runners.
Race organizers Chris Galloway and Todd Oliver reported that this year more than 700 people participated in either the 13.1 mile race, 5K or 1-mile walk, 62 percent of the participants were from Lawrence County. The total number of participants, including volunteers and people watching at the finish line, was 1,500. Those individuals represented 13 states, 61 cities and 109 postal codes.
There will be a few changes in 2015 including a unified start time for all three events and separate medals for the events. Finishers can also expect a more festive atmosphere at the finish.
Challenge winners:
Trophies were presented to the winners of the Corporate Challenge and School Challenge. Companies and schools were encouraged to form teams. They earned points by registering for the race, getting friends and family to register and volunteering.
The team of Dr. Jim Sowders was the winner, with 100 percent of his staff participating. Finishing second was Hoosier Hills Credit Union, and the city of Bedford was third.
Parkview Intermediate School received the School Challenge trophy. Fourteen schools formed teams. Finishing second in points was Stalker Elementary; Shawswick was third.
Galloway and Oliver also set aside a donation of $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County.
