(BEDFORD) - Members of Bedford Urban Enterprise Association’s board of directors are waiting for potential buyers for the BUEA’s property along Fifth Street, and the organization is waiting for the city to take over the former JC Penney building, which is to serve as the future downtown site of the new StoneGate Arts and Education Center.
BUEA also is waiting for the Lawrence County's Solid Waste Management District's recycling center to shift its operation from the old CSX Depot on J Street to Elliott Stone Co.'s former facilities on Mitchell Road. The county is currently leasing the depot from BUEA and using it as its recycling center.
The Times Mail reports that Dan Kirk, Bedford's Planning director, told board members the Old Milwaukee Depot will not be moved to its new downtown site until April 2016.
"That's a project undertaken through the Indiana Department of Transportation, and there are a lot of steps involved," he explained. "It's going to take some time, but INDOT officials have been very pleased with the plans so far. They are very enthused about what we are doing."
BUEA donated the depot to the city to be used as part of the Stellar's downtown revitalization project.
