City Of Bedford To Open New Recycling Center

Last updated on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford will have a new recycling center, with the doors opening possibly by February.

The Lawrence County Solid Waste Management District is transforming the former Elliott Stone Co. property at 3326 Mitchell Road to a new indoor recycling center and a trash compactor station. The compactor station on Sandpit Road will be moved to the new location

Once the center is finished, it will have two drives. One will lead to the compactor station, where people can drop off trash. From there they will have the option of leaving the facility or going on to the recycling center. A second main drive will lead people directly to the recycling building.

There will be two overhead doors, making two lines for people wanting to recycle items. Once inside, people will put their items into recycling bins between the two lanes. Then they'll exit the west side of the building and head out onto Mitchell Road.

About half of the building will be used for consumers dropping off items. The other half will provide space so workers can process the materials.

In addition, Lawrence County Community Corrections will be housed in another building on that property.

The future of the old CSX depot which currently houses the recycling center is uncertain. It is owned by the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association, which was renting it to the Solid Waste District. The BUEA had offered to give the depot to the county, but the commissioners declined that offer, saying the building needs extensive and expensive repairs.
