(BLOOMFIELD) - DNA on shoes led police to focus on son in death of Greene County author Ruby Moon Houldson.
Police say 22-year-old Jorrell Houldson stabbed his mother more than 20 times leaving her dead at her home. Greene County Coroner Sherri Wilson says Ruby's death was exsanguinating hemorrhage due to multiple force injuries to the neck, chest, abdomen and extremities. Wilson ruled the death homicide.
Blood that contained Ruby Houldson's DNA profile was located at a number of places on shoes that belonged to Jorrell Houldson.
Police say Jorrell Houldson was at his mother's home, south of Linton in the Goose Pond area, on Oct. 1, sometime between 7:30 and 8 a.m. to pay his mother rent money.
Police believe Ruby was upset with her son because the rent was late and think this may have caused Jorrell to attack his mother. Jorrell lived in Ruby's former residence at 27 M Street SE in Linton. Ruby, who had been helping her son financially, had also recently stopped paying the cable and utility bills at her former residence.
According to police, Jorrell didn't have the rent money because he is unemployed and he had told police the money he did have was invested in a drug deal
On the day of the murder, Jorrell did not pay his mother any rent money, because Ruby, who always wrote a receipt for the money, had not wrote out a receipt that day nor was any money found in her home.
A friend of Ruby discovered her body around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Her body was found dressed for work in a pool of blood. Her car was running in the driveway.
A neighbor told police that Jorrell Houldson's car had been parked in the driveway earlier that morning.
Family members reported that Jorrell had a history of beating his mother.
Jorrell Houldson's roommates told police that Jorrell had left early that morning to go to his mother's to pay the rent and that when he returned Jorrell had spent about 30 minutes in the bathroom.
Jorrell told police the morning of the murder that he had went to his mother's, taking $550 cash for rent in an envelope and stayed 20 minutes.
He denied killing his mother and when police pointed out that he never asked how his mother died, Jorrell replied: "Why would I care how my mother died?"
Jorrell Houldson also allegedly told detectives that if they searched his home they would not find his mother's blood on his clothing or shoes and the knife he usually carries would be at his home on a piano.
Police say there were a number of inconsistencies in Jorrell's stories.
Jorrell did provide a DNA swab and agreed to take a polygraph but didn't show up for the test.
He also did not attend the visitation or the funeral service for his mother.
A warrant was issued for Jorrell Houldson's arrest late Friday afternoon charging him with one count of felony murder. Once arrested he will be held without bond.
The search for Jorrell Houldson continues. He is 22-years-old, height 5' 7", weight approximately 175 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.
Anyone with information about Houldson's whereabouts is asked to contact the Greene County Sheriff's Department at 812-384-4411 or call Greene County CrimeStoppers to make an anonymous tip by calling (812) TIP LINE or (812) 847-5643.
