(BEDFORD) - Part of 17th Street, between H and I streets, was blocked for around two hours Friday because of a natural gas leak.
The Bedford Fire Department responded at 10:04 a.m., and remained on scene until just after noon.
Bedford Fire Department Firefighters evacuated two apartment buildings.
Bedford Fire Department Battalion Chief Stephen Haverly says almost anything could ignite the gas, so firefighters were trying to keep any possible ignition sources away from the area.
Les Tipton of Bedford Utilities was supervising a crew working on water mains as part of an ongoing city project. While working, the crew struck a gas service line going to one of the buildings, and Vectren Energy, which services the buildings, had to respond from Bloomington, so the gas could not be shut off.
