(UNDATED) - Today, tobacco users nationwide are encouraged to take a day off from using cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products as part of the Great American Smokeout.
"The Great American Smokeout is a day we ask smokers to attempt to quit for a day with the hope it'll lead to a smoke free lifetime," said Sally Petty, regional director with the Indiana State Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission.
Over the course of 2014, the American Cancer Society reports approximately 42 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, meaning just under 1 in 5 adults are smokers. As of 2012, there were also 13.4 million cigar smokers and 2.3 million pipe smokers. Tobacco use has also reportedly led to 224,210 new cases of lung cancer this year and an estimated 159,260 deaths.
