(SULLIVAN) - 34-year-old Kevin Hays of Sullivan was arrested on a warrant for theft of a firearm last week after Sullivan City Police were called to a home on Neville Avenue.
A woman reported that Hays stole a Beretta PX4 Storm 40-caliber handgun from her home on Graysville Street.
Police say that Hays had offered to sell the woman the handgun for $400 and she agreed, paying him in cash. Hays then placed the gun, holster, two magazines and a box of ammunition on top of a cabinet in her dining room. According to the police report, the woman told police Hays was visiting her residence again on Oct. 17 and stayed there while she and a friend went shopping. It wasn't until Oct. 19 that she and her husband noticed the handgun was missing.
The gun's prior owner, a Sullivan residence, then alleged that Hays had try to return the handgun to him on Oct. 18, because he had requested it back after Hays hadn't paid him the amount they had agreed upon.
According to police Hays told the man he would return the gun in exchange for $120 so he could buy food and beer. The man paid that amount and got the gun back.
