(BLOOMINGTON) - Court documents describe disturbing details of how two Indiana University students were raped at gunpoint.
19-year-old Vaylen Glazewood and 19-year-old Michael Deweese stood before a judge Wednesday for their initial court appearance where they face multiple charges. Both denied the charges.
Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekhoff says the two Indianapolis men aren't IU students and were in town to "party" over the weekend.
Police say Glazewood and Deweese forced themselves inside a bottom-floor apartment in the 500 block of East 12th Street. It's an area just a stone's throw from campus and where thousands of students sleep each night.
Police say the victims told them that they woke up with guns to their head. One victim said she was forced to perform oral sex and then told to go to her roommate's room where they were both raped. An attacker told one of the women if she wanted to complete her college career, she'd better not look at him.
While this was happening, police say a third roommate heard the commotion, locked her bedroom door and called 911 and said she thought her roommates were either being "raped or killed."
When Officer William Abram arrived at the apartment he found the door to have been pried open and was left cracked a few inches.
Abram says he announced his presence, saw a man pull up his pants and then heard two gunshots.
One victim told police when she heard the first gunshot she thought the man raping her roommate had killed her.
Police say that's when Glazebrook and Deweese climbed through a bedroom window and took off.
Officer Abram chased the suspects and says one of them fired a gunshot in his direction and he felt something graze his side. He says he thought he was shot. He fired two shots in the suspects' direction, hitting one in the arm and one in the leg.
Officers quickly arrested Glazebrook. According to court documents police found the cell phone of one of the victims, a phone charger, Wii controller, and two pairs of female sunglasses with Glazebrook. All of the items were reported missing by the rape victims. Deweese was found minutes later inside a car driven by 19-year-old Jesse Benti-Torres who was also arrested.
Wednesday, the three men appeared before a judge in Monroe County and were read their charges included with possible carried sentences. Tension was high at one point the bailiff had to warn friends of the suspects to be quiet. Tension also spilled out into the hallways with friends of the suspects using expletive language claiming there may have been a gun, but there were no rapes.
If convicted, the teens could face decades in prison. DeWeese and Glazebrook each face 15 charges, including attempted murder, six counts of rape, burglary and other crimes committed with a weapon, which could add 30 years to any prison sentence.
Another 19-year-old, Jesse Benti-Torres, is charged with burglary while armed and assisting a criminal. He told police he was just the driver who dropped the two other suspects off at the crime scene.
All three have a bond hearing set for Nov. 18. Their pretrial hearings are set for Jan. 5, 2015.
