(WASHINGTON CO.) - Unofficial results indicate a Democrat will remain in the sheriff’s office as Roger Newlon has defeated Roy Overshiner.
In the county commissioner District 2 race, Republican Preston Shell will join the board, as he defeated Democrat Tom Day.
One of the tightest races of the night was for county auditor, a race between Republican Randy Bills and Democrat Claude Combs. Bills managed to pull ahead, but by won by less than 100 votes.
In the county council race, District 1 went to Ben Bowling, who will remain on the board, defeating Jody Smedley, a Democrat. In the District 2 race, voters returned John Revels, a Republican, deciding not to give Teresa Pittman, a Democrat newcomer, a chance. In District 3, David Hoar easily defeated Libertarian Rhonda Greene. In District 4, Frank Nobles, a Republican, easily won over Democrat Karen Wischmeier.
For Salem School Board, Becky White and Monika Spaulding were voted on as new members while voters returned Tricia Wheeler for another term. Incumbents Jason Pepmeier and Todd Ewen were defeated.
At West Washington, newcomer Forrest Joe Walker rolled over long-time incumbent Leslie Batt, 795-497. The other long-time incumbent, Rick Roberts was ousted in favor of Tim Barksdale, 672-579.
At East Washington, Theresa Gottbrath a newcomer, easily defeated long time incumbent Cecil Shrout, and Jennifer Incantalupo. In the Pekin town council race, Thomas Bricker won over Sandy Ison for the sole seat.
On the state level, Republican newcomer Erin Houchin easily carried Washington County, her home county, defeating Democrat Richard Young, who has held the seat more than three decades. In Washington County, Houchin beat Young in all of the 21 precincts, in many by a wide margin. Houchin went on to easily win the seat, carrying all but one of the counties in the district.
Salem Republican Steve Davisson easily held on to the Distirct 73 seat in the House of Representatives, defeating Democrat Doug Leatherbury in every precinct in Washington County.
