(BEDFORD) - The White River Humane Society has a serious cat overcrowding problem and needs the public’s help - now.
The shelter has room for about 100 cats and kittens, but the population has exploded to twice that and adoptions have not been enough to keep the numbers down.
WRHS President Buddy Hendricks is seeking the public's help.
"If something doesn't happen soon will have to look at other options," Hendricks says. "Keeping this many cats is unhealthy and inhumane and puts the felines at a risk of viral infection. Thankfully they are all healthy, but that can change at any time if we don't get the population down."
Hendrick says the decision to euthanize cats is not an easy one for the board and goes against everything the board believes in. So Hendricks is appealing to the community to visit the shelter and give a forever home to one of their felines before the shelter has no option but to euthanize the cats for humane reasons. Officials only have a few weeks before something will have to be done.
