(HELTONVILLE) - A fire at a mobile home on Bartlettsville Road caused damage to a kitchen Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters from Marshall, Shawswick, Indian Creek and Oolitic were alerted to the blaze at 1:44 p.m.
According to Shawswick VFD Capt. Bob Barber from Station 1, the fire started when the kitchen stove was left on at the home of Jeremy and Ashley Brooks.
"Two women had been cooking and one of them forgot to turn the stove off," Barber says. "The two then went to town and when they returned a short time later they could hear the smoke detectors sounding from the driveway."
The two rushed into the house to find the home filled with smoke and the stove on fire.
"Ashley attempted to reach over and turn the stove off, but was unable to because the pot left on the stove was on fire," Barber says.
The fire spread to the kitchen counter and up a wall.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, containing it to the kitchen and ventilated the home.
"There was minor fire damage," Barber says. "They will have to replace the stove and counter top and repair the wall. I am estimating damaged between $5,000 to $7,500."
The other woman was treated at the scene by a Seals ambulance crew for smoke inhalation.
"She refused to be transported to the hospital," Barber added.
All of the firefighters wanted to thank the Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Department Women's Axillary for bringing refreshments to firefighters.
