(JASPER) - A Jasper man has been arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated battery after his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son died after police say he suffered severe burns to the face, bites to his arm, cuts to his inner upper lip and a severe brain injury.
The child, who suffered brain trauma, was pronounced dead at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday. He had been brought to the hospital about 12:30 a.m.
Police say 21-year-old Charles Hopf was watching the child while his mother was at work.
According to police, Charles confessed he had bitten the child earlier in the evening and the head injury had possibly been sustained when he pushed the child down after becoming frustrated with him. He also told police the burn injuries were sustained when the child's bath water was accidentally turned on too hot.
Hopf faces a preliminary charge of aggravated battery causing the death of a child less than 14 years old. He is being held without bond in the Dubois County Jail. It was not known if he has hired an attorney.
