(BEDFORD) - Most Lawrence County teachers will receive a little more cash thanks to a high performance award.
Last week the state awarded $30 million to 1,300 schools to reward teachers for high performance.
For North Lawrence schools, the awards total $116,972. For Mitchell, the sum is $51,964. The money is to go to classroom teachers rated "effective" or "highly effective" on the state rating system, and most local teachers were rated in those categories.
Superintendent Gary Conner and Mitchell Superintendent Steve Phillips says the money will be equally distributed to all teachers who qualify as effective or highly effective.
The $30 million is the first distribution under a new teacher performance program touted by Gov. Mike Pence.
According to the governor's office, schools with students earning ISTEP-Plus or end-of-course assessment passing scores of 72.5 percent or above or with a 5 percent or more growth in graduation rates from the previous year qualified for grant funds. The bonuses will be awarded to teachers who are rated effective or highly effective under Indiana's teacher evaluation system for the 2013-14 academic year.
The governor's office reported schools will receive the following dollar amounts based on performance to distribute among effective or highly effective teachers:
ISTEP+/ECA passing rates:
