(BROWN CO.) - A Greenwood man was sentenced for causing the death of his girlfriend, 27-year-old Jennifer “Danielle” Garrison, also of Greenwood.
34-year-old William Lambert plead guilty to a charge of reckless homicide after Garrison was thrown from his motorcycle in a no-passing zone in Brown County.
He was sentenced to one year in jail and three years of probation that will include a year on home detention, 800 hours of community service and a $500 fine. He was also ordered not to ride his motorcycle while he was on probation.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the crash that killed Garrison happened on Sept. 5, 2013 on State Road 135 North between Fruitdale and the Morgan-Brown county line.
According to a Brown County Sheriff's Department report, Lambert and Garrison were traveling with Lambert's family to BikerFest at Bill Monroe Music Park in Bean Blossom, when Lambert fell behind. In an attempt to catch up to his family, Lambert attempted to pass a sport utility vehicle and his family's camper in an area clearly marked with a solid double line at the crest of a hill and entered the path of an oncoming truck.
When Lambert saw the truck, he locked up his back brakes, causing the bike to skid and fishtail before going down on its side and throwing Lambert and Garrison off the motorcycle
Garrison landed in the path of the truck, which was driven by 56-year-old Allen Rutter of Morgantown. Rutter attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the motorcycle but his truck hit Garrison.
Garrison was pronounced dead at the scene and Lambert suffered a shoulder injury.
According to an Indiana State Police accident scene reconstruction, Lambert was traveling at least 81 miles per hour when the skid started and a minimum of 69 miles per hour when the motorcycle began to slide.
Blood tests from Lambert and Garrison showed there was no alcohol or controlled substances in their systems.
