(BRAZIL) - Indiana State Police arrested the parents of five children on felony neglect charges Tuesday afternoon.
Officers were notified about the crime school officials at East Side Elementary School.
According to police, on Nov. 7, 30-year-old Jennifer Proctor had destroyed some of the children's clothing and each of their school backpacks. She then ordered her children into the living room and made them watch her cut her throat with a rotary-style craft knife. She was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital that night for treatment of minor abrasions.
After learning about the incidents, officers obtained a search warrant and found the home in deplorable conditions with animal feces on the floor and on the children's clothing and very little food in the home for the children.
The children were removed from the home and placed with their grandparents.
Clay County Department of Child Services is also involved in the investigation.
Police arrested Proctor and the children's father, 37-year-old Michael S. Hunter. The two have been in a long-term relationship and both resided in the home in the 200 block North Charles B. Hall with the children.
