(BEDFORD) - Seven high school senior girls will be competing for the title of Lawrence County Distinguished Young Women Saturday at the Bedford North Lawrence Performing Arts Center.
Those competing to win scholarships and awards are Dorothy Timan, Suzanne Schneider, Bailey Cooper, Cassidy Tackett, Alexandrea Cummings, Abigail Gentry and Fiona Schlegel.
Nearly $5,400 in awards will be presented. In addition to naming a winner, who will represent the county at the state program in February, awards will be presented to first and second runners-up, a spirit winner and six category winners.
The winner will receive a cash scholarship of $2,300, first runner-up $1,100 and second runner-up $500. The Spirit Award is worth $250, and each category award is worth $200.
The teens will be judged in five categories: scholastic achievement (20 percent), judges' interview (25 percent), creative and performing arts (25 percent), fitness (15 percent) and self-expression (15 percent).
2014 Lawrence County Distinguished Young Woman Minal Patel, of Mitchell, will place the medallion on the winner.
Tickets cost $5. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; the program starts at 6 p.m.
Sponsors are Hoosier Hills Credit Union, Bedford Lions Club, Tri Kappa of Mitchell and Tri Kappa of Bedford.
