(ORLEANS) - Orleans Chamber officials have received official confirmation from the North Pole that Santa Claus will be visiting Orleans on Saturday to celebrate “Christmas on the Square.”
The big guy is expected to arrive in downtown Orleans via fire truck at or around 5 p.m. and will greet visitors at the bandstand on the square.
Members of the Orleans Municipal Fire Department will also be on hand to assist with Santa's annual visit.
Children can have their photo taken for free and can pick up those photos at Town Hall on Dec. 17. The event is sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Orleans.
Santa also brought his special mailbox from the North Pole, so children can drop off their "Postcards for Santa" with their Christmas wishes. The free Santa postcards will be available inside the Chamber's Visitor Center Saturday night and can be "mailed" free of charge at Santa's Mailbox, which will be located in front of the Chamber office until Christmas Eve.
The 6th Annual Orleans Christmas, sponsored by the Orleans Chamber of Commerce, will be held on the square and is set to begin Saturday from 5 p.m. till 7 p.m.
From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. the Orleans United Methodist Church will host a soup supper and cookie walk in the basement of the church. Kirby Stailey will be performing both traditional and new Christmas music.
The Children's Christmas Funtime Express will provide free train rides around the decorated historic Congress Square.
Live holiday entertainment is planned during the event including special performances from the Orleans High School band and choir.
A Nativity with live animals, sponsored by the Orleans Ministerial Association will tell the traditional Christmas Story.
There will also be free horse and wagon rides, weathering permitting. Rides leave from Chamber Welcome Center (north side of square).
Orleans Tri Kappa, will offer food and hot goodies from hot chocolate and cider to homemade goodies like grilled apples.
Orleans Bulldog Regiment Band Boosters will be providing warm food items, and sweets as well.
