(BEDFORD) - A 3-On-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 to help raise money for Mark Ryan.
Mark Ryan, North Lawrence Career Center teacher and former BNL boys basketball coach, is being treated for a rare disease called Pseudomyxoma peritonei, or PMP, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. PMP is a clinical condition caused by cancerous cells that produce tumors, cause fibrosis of tissues, and impede digestion or organ function, and if left untreated, the tumors produces a jelly-like substance called mucin that will fill the abdominal cavity.
The fee is $60 per team and all proceeds will go toward paying for traveling expenses to Pittsburgh as Ryan participates in a clinical study at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on PMP.
The tournament will be held at Oolitic Middle School and Dollens Elementary gymnasiums. the tournament will broken down into the following divisions: Elementary, Jr. High, High School, Adult Competitive and Adult Recreation.
The time of play will be determined by the number of teams participating. Games will conclude in time for those participating and attending to head to the Girls Basketball Semi-State Tournament.
Officials say if enough teams participate the tournament may start on Friday night, Feb. 27. If there is not a huge response teams will play on Feb. 28.
Applications can be picked up at: Bedford Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County, North Lawrence Career Center, and North Lawrence Transportation Department.
Students only at these schools may pick up an application at their school office: Oolitic Middle School, Dollens Elementary, Shawswick Elementary, Fayetteville Elementary, Heltonville Elementary, Parkview Intermediate, Stalker Elementary.
