(BLOOMINGTON) - Investigators have been unable to determine what caused a noontime fire on Sunday that may keep the Village Deli on Kirkwood Avenue closed for a while.
Bloomington Fire Department Investigator Joe Johnson says the cause is "undetermined."
Luckily for the Village Deli, the inside of the restaurant largely avoided the flames. Ninety percent of the damage was to the exterior of the building and its electrical components, says Village Deli Owner Bob Costello.
Bloomington firefighters responded to the blaze around noon on Sunday.
According to Bloomington Fire Battalion Chief Rick Betermichael, the fire began in the back of the restaurant.
Diners and employees were rushed out of the Deli, by Costello after he discovered the fire and billowing black smoke filled the establishment.
Adjacent businesses were temporarily closed while fire trucks and police cars blocked Grant Street and Kirkwood Avenue to battle the blaze.
