(OOLITIC) - Firefighters from four fire departments battled a blaze at a home in the 200 block of Indiana Avenue in Oolitic Monday night.
Firefighters from Oolitic, Shawswick, Marshall and Indian Creek Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze at 9:16 p.m.
The home is owned by David and Mary Berry.
"When I arrived, fire and smoke was visible," says Oolitic VFD Assistant Chief Rodger Staley says. "Flames and smoke were both showing on the south side. It was coming out the windows and from under the eve of the roof."
It took firefighters until 12:30 a.m. to control the blaze.
"We were able to contain the fire to the attic and upstairs area," Staley added. "But there was smoke and water damage to the lower level."
Staley says the fire started in the lower level and worked its way upstairs.
"The fire went straight through," Staley says. "The roof collapsed in one area."
Staley believes the fire was electrical in nature.
"The cause is still under investigation and the state fire marshal has been called to investigate," he added.
Firefighters were on the scene until 2:14 this morning.
Also assisting at the scene was the Oolitic Police Department, TOPES and an IU Health Hospital ambulance crew.
