(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department battled a house fire Saturday in the 600 block of T Street.
According to Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner, firefighters were called to the home of Linda Melvin at 1:17 p.m.
"When firefighters arrived there was smoke coming from the front porch area," Wagner says.
The fire was located in the basement area.
"It was electrical in nature," Wagner added. "There were several extension cords causing an electrical overload. The homeowner also mentioned having problems with her breaker box."
Fire inspector David Wright is investigating the cause of the fire.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly, limiting the damage to the basement area.
"There was some light smoke damage to the upstairs area," Wagner says. "Duke Energy was contacted and the power to the home was shut off, along with the gas and water because of a ruptured water line in the basement due to the fire."
The homeowner did not have insurance on the home.
"The Bedford Police Department found a place for the homeowner to stay," Wagner added.
