(SALEM) - A fire caused heavy damage to a the home of Washington County Assessor Jason Cockerill Monday night.
The Salem Fire Department was alerted to the blaze at 5:45 p.m. at the corner of North Main and Emma streets in Salem.
The Cockerill's and their three young daughters escaped unharmed.
Emily Cockerill told firefighters she was in the kitchen when she heard a loud noise like someone breaking glass upstairs. When she went to investigate she noticed a door on the third floor was bright orange and then heard a loud pop like wood popping in a wood stove and knew the house was on fire.
Firefighters were able to get extinguish the blaze in about 25 minutes.
A cause of the fire is still under investigation.
