(BEDFORD) - Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital has launched a tobacco cessation program, offering support to those who wish to quit smoking.
The program offers tobacco cessation sessions and support groups at no cost to participants. Sessions are held Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. in the Community Education Room at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
The program is Lawrence County's only no-cost tobacco cessation program that is open to all members of the general public.
Currently, the adult smoking rate in Lawrence County is 20 percent, meaning 1 in every 5 adults in the community is a smoker. Smoking affects nearly every part of the body and significantly raises the risk of heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. The good news is that your body can recover from these increased risk factors if you quit smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a year after quitting smoking, your risk for heart attack drops; five years after quitting, your risk of mouth, throat, esophagus and bladder cancer drop by half; and 10 years after quitting smoking, your risk for lung cancer is reduced by half.
For more information about the program, please call (812)275-1386. Those who cannot attend a class but still need help to quit smoking are encouraged to call the free Indiana Tobacco Quitline at (800) QUIT-NOW.
