(VEVAY) - A Vevay man died in a house fire on Friday.
The fire began around 11:45 p.m. at a home on Riverview Drive near the Jeff-Craig Elementary School.
According to Fire Chief Christopher See, the house was nearly fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Several neighbors and bystanders had attempted to enter the home prior to firefighters arriving, because they believed 73-year-old Ron Jarvis was still inside the home. The group attempted to use a garden hose to combat the fire.
Because of the progression of the fire, crews were unable to make entry on arrival. Firefighters requested additional help from Moorefield and East Enterprise fire departments to put out the fire.
Jarvis' body was discovered on the lower level of the bi-level home once firefighters were able to go inside the home.
The Indiana Fire Marshal and the Switzerland County coroner were called to the scene.
Firefighters say the fire started on the south side of the home and the cause is still under investigation.
The home was a total loss.
