(BARTHOLOMEW CO.) - An 82-year-old Robert Legan was killed in a truck accident Tuesday afternoon.
Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to the 5000 block of North Talley Road on a report of possible entrapment just after 1 p.m.
When they arrived they found Legan at the rear of a pickup truck. He was conscious, but having trouble breathing.
According to police, a 14-year-old juvenile was attempting to lower the tailgate of the pickup truck, but the truck needed to be moved because it was parked too close to a metal-sided pole barn.
Police say Legan stayed behind the truck and had the juvenile move the vehicle forward. But when the juvenile started the manual-shift truck it was in the reverse gear and the truck moved back, breaking through the wall of the metal barn and then into a snow covered field.
Legan was shoved through the wall and then under the pickup behind the rear axle. Police say the tires of the truck did not run over Legan.
Both the teen and Legan were taken to Columbus Regional Hospital. Police say Legan died on the way to the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
