Bloomington Man To Show At Westminster Dog Show

Last updated on Monday, February 16, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - Fans of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show can root for a giant schnauzer named Jake with local roots when he makes his debut in New York City.

The Herald Times reports that Jake's owner Steven Lynn, a Bloomington dental surgeon, met Jake at a dog show in Indianapolis about two years ago. Nancy Nier, owner of FantaC Giant Schnauzers in Bedford, was Jake's breeder and owner at the time. Lynn assisted Nier at Jake's show and, since then, he and Jake have been inseparable.

Jake, also known as FantaC J's Bien Parado, which means 'smooth mover' in Spanish, has done well enough to be ranked among the top-ranked giant schnauzers in the U.S. Only the top five of the breed were invited to Westminster.

Lynn has a professional handler to show Jake at the actual shows. Norma Smith, Jake's handler, has been showing dogs for more than 30 years.

It will take Lynn about three to four hours to groom Jake before the show.

The Westminster's 139th Annual All Breed Dog Show will take place at both Pier 92 and 94 on Monday and Tuesday, February 16-17, with evening finals once again to be staged at Madison Square Garden each of those nights.

Fanta C Giant Schnauzers, located at 283 Old Farm Road, is a husband and wife team devoted to educating, promoting and advancing information and awareness pertaining to Giant Schnauzers.

"Bob and I began our devotion to the Giant Schnauzer in the late 80's," Nancy says on her website. "Our first Giant, Majescos, instilled in us great respect for the intelligence and stamina of the breed. Her loyalty and devotion to our family never faltered throughout her 15 years. We came to understand and admire the 'heart' of the breed through her example."
