(BEDFORD) - Join Dale Weigel from the White River RC&D Forestry Committee on Thursday, March 19 and Saturday, March 21 to hone your skills in identifying trees in winter.
The public is invited to attend one or both sessions of the workshop. The cost for one or both days is $5 for adults, and free for children 16 and under.
Thursday's session will be from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Center in Paoli. The Center is next to the Fairgrounds at 1075 N. Sandy Hook Road. Saturday's session will be held on the Hoosier National Forest, at Wesley Chapel Gulf off SR 37 near Orleans, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Signs will be posted from SR 37 to direct people to the area.
Weigel explains that in Thursday's session he will go over ways to easily tell trees apart without their leaves. As a forester with 36 years of experience Weigel has learned many tricks to identify trees. He will bring twig samples and people can examine buds and twigs of common trees to compare the different species.
On Saturday participants will meet at the Wesley Chapel Gulf parking lot. Weigel will take people on a foray through the woods identifying trees and showing people the differences in bark, twigs, and other characteristics. Other area foresters will also be on hand to assist on Saturday. If people are unable to attend the Thursday session, they are still welcome to attend on Saturday.
The nominal cost of the workshop may be paid at the door to help cover room rental and materials; however we would appreciate pre-registration so we have enough handouts. Please call Teena Ligman at (812) 276-4757 for more information or to register for the workshop.
