(UNDATED) - Concern for driver safety in the aftermath of a snow storm is prompting Indiana Department of Transportation officials to ask businesses and residents not to push snow from driveways and parking lots onto state highways.
"It's dangerous when vehicles swerve to avoid snow piled at the edge of a road," says one INDOT unit foreman.
Others agree with her words: "Packed snow causes cars to skid. Trucks swerve to avoid snow piles and veer across lane lines.
"Don't push snow onto the roadway."
According to Indiana case law, property owners must exercise "reasonable care" not to interfere with safe travel on public roadways. IC 8-23-6-6(a)(3) prohibits putting a structure or obstruction in a highway. Piling snow where it impairs traffic safety could be considered an "obstruction", a Class C infraction.
