(MARTIN CO.) - To combat the meth problem the Martin County Sheriff’s Department hopes to add a K9 unit to its force.
"In order to make this a top priority and protect our community, children and future, we must continue to fight this war on drugs," said Martin County Sheriff Travis Roush in a press release. "We believe a K9 unit will have a significant impact on battling the growing drug problem and we have received overwhelming feedback from our community supporting the addition of a K9 unit to our team."
Due the expense of the K9 unit, it will cost around $20,000 for the dog as well as training for the dog and its handler, the department hopes to receive donations from the community to raise money to purchase the K-9 unit..
To help offset the cost, the department is hosting a soup and sandwich fundraiser with a live auction on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Martin County Community Building from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. The meal is a free will donation.
All proceeds from the event will go to help finance the K9 unit.
Items for the auction, as well as monetary donations, are still being accepted. The auction will begin at 6 p.m.
Any donations are welcome and you can arrange pick up by contacting the department.
