(BLOOMINGTON) - There will be no deer hunt in the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve this year.
Bloomington Parks and Recreation, acting on the advice of professional deer herd management contractor White Buffalo, Inc., announced late Friday afternoon it has canceled the deer cull.
Officials from White Buffalo Inc. say the conditions were not right for an efficient deer cull. The company had been contracted to harvest 100 deer which would then be donated to local food banks.
Parks administrator Mick Renneisen says with such a bountiful amount of natural food, the deer weren't lured to the bait sites White Buffalo had set up.
There will not be another attempt at a deer cull this year, because the special user deer permit issued by the Department of Natural Resources expired at the end of the month.
