(SPRINGVILLE) - The Springville home of Steve and Donna Heaton was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.
Firefighters from Perry, Marshall, Indiana Creek and Oolitic volunteer fire departments were alerted to the blaze at 4:20 a.m. at the home on Spencer Pike owned by Cheryl Shireman of Columbus. The Heaton family was renting the bi-level home.
A Seals ambulance and Tabernacle of Praise Emergency Services also responded to the scene
Donna Heaton was asleep on the couch when Steve smelled smoke. Donna rushed out of the home with the families pets. Steve attempted to put out the fire that started in the wood stoves with buckets of water, but the fire was consuming the home.
The fire had engulfed the home when firefighters arrived. It took about two hours before firefighters were able to contain the blaze.
The fire spread to the attic area and a part of the roof collapsed after a tree also caught fire and fell onto the roof.
Firefighters were able to retrieve some of the family's antiques and Steve's firearms and knives.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army assisted the family with clothing and housing.
